John Lynch", original matching letterhead enclosure with General Orders setting rules for organizing new New England regiments in the Union Army; reduced slightly at right, fresh and Very Fine.

This was the only military facility named for Lincoln during his lifetime. Fort Abraham Lincoln in Dakota Territory was not named until the 1870s.

Recruiting Bounty, partly-printed document, Lockport, N.Y., Provost Marshal's Office, August, 16, 1864; top half certifies that one Daniel D. McLachlen has presented one Albert Ruscu to serve "as his Substitute in the Military Service"; bottom half, dated Aug. 22 at Batavia, N.Y., is a receipt for $400 "for Bounty and premium on above", signed by McLachlen; affixed 2¢ revenue stamp is also signed and dated by McLachlen (DDMcL). Very Fine.

As the war dragged on many states paid a bounty in order to fill their quotas. Those new recruits sometimes used the bounty money to pay substitutes to serve for them.
